It’s an all too common refrain to say we are short on time, but from a very personal perspective, suffice it to say time has never meant more to me than it does now as we rally around the care of a dear family member.
I’ve always hoped that TCMP represents a time-saver for our readers. Sifting through the endless stream of new medical data to find the trials that impact practice can be overwhelming. By selecting and presenting trials through the lens of practice change, our mission is to provide you with data and tools to enhance your care of patients across a range of conditions.

We were saddened to hear of the closure of the BC College Library on March 15. The College Library has been an important partner for TCMP since our beginning and we sincerely appreciate everything they have done for our readership.

In the demanding landscape of modern healthcare, physicians bear the weight of both clinical responsibilities and the intricate challenges that come with navigating an evolving health-care system. Physician burdens are a leading cause of practitioner stress and a key factor in early practice exits. Finally, this is being more openly discussed and we are even seeing regulatory and funding bodies starting to acknowledge, and sometimes start to address, this critical issue.

While I do think AI will become a tool we integrate into all aspects of medical practice in the coming years, we still need our collective human intelligence to reflect on how our choices impact patients, their families, the medical system, and society. We might not always agree, but I’ve always held that respectful debate leads to learning and evolution of knowledge.

Who would have thought 2021 could bring with it even more dreadful events than the year before? In this past year, we all became familiar with words that were previously obscure — terms like heat dome, atmospheric river, and now Omicron. Yet, there are words that I’m glad we’re hearing more often these days, too. Words like representation, reconciliation, and the focus of our last article this year: compassion.

2020 will go down as the most challenging year on a number of fronts — with unprecedented stressors affecting our personal and professional lives, not to mention the enormous struggles facing our local and global communities. Thanks to everyone on the front lines, and condolences to all those touched by this pandemic. I hope we can continue to work together to beat COVID-19 and I take solace in the fact the turning point seems to be coming as vaccines are deployed.
This year also marks This Changed My Practice’s 10th year. It’s been an incredibly rewarding journey. Given this milestone, I’ll indulge in a little bit of history and acknowledgments but also share some of our learnings and future plans.

This week’s cover picture is me with Piper, the puppy that changed my practice. We got a puppy this year that made me take time to go for walks with my wife in the mornings before work and spend more mindful downtime with the family. She turned out to be a great balancer to the stress and bustle of an over-scheduled professional life.

More than ever, it seems, it’s important to share opinions that are backed by facts, be willing to revisit and update what you thought you knew before, and be inspired to seek out more information about something you learned anew.
